Oh What A Lovely War

The First World War marked a turning point in the history of man's inhumanity to man and left a legacy of brutality, which still afflicts us today. The subject of this show is the contrast between the cool, unemotional decision making of politicians, high ranking soldiers and businessmen and the warm humanity that is catastrophically destroyed by those decisions.

The full facts about World War 1 were not common knowledge in the early 1960's when Joan Littlewood put together the documentary musical Oh What a Lovely War. The foreign office embargo on documents had only just been lifted. The show evolved from a collection of soldier's songs from the war, which had been recorded by the BBC. All the material came from authentic sources such as Haig's speeches, church sermons and contemporary newspaper headlines.

Casting this show is always a challenge - there are 120 different parts to be allocated to the cast members and, although the original show featured predominantly male lead actors, in this production the use of both sexes to play either gender has added a dynamic energy to some scenes.
