‘The LIKES of US’

A musical chronicling the life story of Dr Thomas Barnardo

and the children of the East End of London in the 19th Century.

Lyrics by Tim Rice

Music by Andrew Lloyd-Webber

The Likes of Us was the first collaboration between award-winning composers Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Written in 1965, The Likes of Us has only ever been performed twice, now with the approval of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber it is being launched by the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) and the Really Useful Group (RUG) to NODA members only prior to its professional release and eventual appearance in the West End.

The Likes Of Us is the story of the life of Dr Thomas Barnardo, a man who was evangelical, entrepreneurial and philanthropic, and whose crusade to rescue children living on the streets became world renowned. Described as “a musical that has existed for 40 years hidden away from view”.

The Likes of Us is Oliver!-esque in style and is best known for the much-quoted Tim Rice lyric: “Here I have a lovely parrot, sound in wind and limb - I can guarantee that there is nothing wrong with him”.

This will be a large and ambitious project and we will need many singers and actors of all ages to get involved.

A word from the one of the directors
(reproduced from the performance programme)

I suspect that until you saw this show advertised many of you were unaware of it's existence.

However, I am sure that most of you will have heard of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd-Webber and are familiar with many songs from their hit musicals. 'The Likes Of Us' was the first product of their partnership and tells the story of Dr. Thomas Barnardo who founded several children's homes and fostering schemes.

Today, Barnardo's operates in different ways but continues working to reduce the impact of poverty on children, young people, families and communities - through social, economic and community action. Part of the proceeds from this show will go towards supporting their work and there will be a retiring collection.

You have had to wait over 40 years to this show. Thank you for your patience, I know you will feel well rewarded. So sit back, relax and enjoy St Nicolas Player's production of 'The Likes Of Us' as we call 'overture and beginners please'.
